MacGregor State School Newsletter 2024 - Edition 16
From the Principal

Prep and Year One

Welcome back, everyone! I hope you all had a peaceful break. The weather was absolutely beautiful!
Last week, I had the privilege of participating in a school review shadowing at another school. This is a great regional initiative that allows Deputy Principals to participate in this process. As you may know, Mr Gerchow has been an internal reviewer for some time and undertakes a review at other schools at least three or four times throughout the year. We, as Deputy Principals, are very grateful that Mr Gerchow supports our participation in this important work.
I can definitely say that this was by far the most valuable professional development opportunity I have attended to date. Not only did I gain a greater appreciation for what MacGregor State School has to offer, but I also acquired new ideas and strategies for becoming a more effective leader to support our work at MacGregor State School.
I have also developed a deeper understanding and appreciation for the process and the efforts that reviewers put into this work, ensuring our voices (students, staff, families and community) are represented with integrity. The intensity of work and rigour involved in the review process are truly remarkable. The attention to detail, quality assurance and editing steps, taken to ensure the schools are positioned to succeed and do the right work at the right time, are commendable.
I feel invigorated, excited and eager to implement the new learning as we commence the journey of Strategic Planning for the next four years, building upon our recent School Review affirmations, findings and key improvement strategies.
Our Learning
Our classrooms are definitely buzzing with energy, excitement and enthusiasm about learning.
Please take the time to stop by the new display of learning near the Tuckshop. Thank you to 1A and 1B for displaying some wonderful work that is happening in their classrooms.

Swimming is back!
This term, our Prep and Year 1 learners are swimming as part of the Health and Physical Education curriculum. We have had a fantastic start this term, with all children enjoying the classes, wishing they had more opportunities to swim during the week. Unless your child has a medical condition that prevents them from swimming, all learners must participate in this activity. If you have reservations about the swimming classes, please discuss your concerns with your child’s classroom teacher. The classes are delivered by qualified instructors, with adequate supervision available at all times.
As always, if parents wish to come and watch a swimming class, please ensure that you follow the correct protocols.
- All visitors to the school must sign in at the office and wear a clear identification label.
- To protect the privacy of all children and staff, we kindly ask that families refrain from taking photos and videos of children and staff.
- All parents are required to stay outside the change rooms while children are changing. We have staff available to support children during the changing process. If you believe your child requires additional support, please discuss the needs with the child’s teacher. We will make sure that all children experience success and are supported during this transition.
Below are some photos of our Prep children having their first swimming class.

This allows for every child to receive and end of year award to celebrate their achievements throughout the year. Celebrating these achievements will be a very special time and something that can be celebrated when they bring their certificate home. These awards may cover a range of areas.
WHY IS LEARNING TO SWIM SUCH AN IMPORTANT TASK
This term students in Year 3 will be participating in the school swimming program. I thought that it is a good time to reflect on the value of swimming for all students.
- Swimming lessons save lives
Water can be dangerous, and it is imperative that adults and children learn the necessary skills to navigate it safely. All water activities carry an inherent risk of drowning, but children are particularly at risk. In 2012-2013, there were 40 deaths of children aged 0 to 14 years by drowning in Australia. Swimming pools were where 90% of the deaths occurred, with almost every death occurring while unsupervised. We can all see that these numbers are unsatisfactory. Swimming lessons are the best way to massively decrease the risk of drowning. Swimming lessons may also give your child, or an adult, the skills they need to assist others in the water when needed. Or swimming lessons may give a child or adult the knowledge and ability to spot a swimmer in trouble and know who to ask for help. Both reasons demonstrate that swimming lessons should be prioritised above many other activities, due to its lifesaving consequences.
2. Improve fitness
Swimming is a great way to become physically fit and healthy, whether an adult or child. Swimming is a great workout because the water acts as resistance for your body to work against. Swimming keeps your heart rate up, while also being low impact. This reduces the stress on your body and is one great reason why swimming is ideal for rehabilitation, the frail, or elderly. Swimming is also an effective method for improving muscle strength, cardiovascular fitness and endurance. For keen athletes, swimming is great for maintaining general fitness, muscle strength and versatility in exercise varieties. Perfect for gradual increases in flexibility, coordination, balance and posture, swimming is effective at improving your overall health as well as your fitness.
3. Mental health and confidence
Swimming can benefit you or your child’s mind in a multitude of ways. Firstly, the confidence gained both on land and in water can do wonders for mood, learning abilities and general self-confidence. Being comfortable and confident in the water means that you are likely to feel more confident in the wider world. Additionally, the mental health benefits of swimming are very well documented. Many find they experience mental peace when swimming, allowing them to process, think, and relax. This is often described as a meditative state.
4. A life skill
In Australia, swimming is essential for full participation in the community over summer. Swimming lessons ensure you are comfortable and confident to attend days at the beach, on a boat, around a pool or in a creek. This means you will be set for life, and able to enjoy a fully developed social life.
We look forward to seeing all of the students in the pool each week.

SWIMMING FUN – 3B WITH MR UNDERWOOD
Congratulations to the students from 3B with Mr Underwood who had a 100% participation rate in the first week of swimming.
MENTAL HEALTH WEEK - 5TH TO 13TH OCTOBER
QMHW is a reminder that we all have mental health. When you look after your wellbeing, your family, friends and neighbours, your communities are uplifted too. Childhood and adolescence provide key opportunities to develop the foundations for good mental health and prevent mental health problems.
https://www.qldmentalhealthweek.org.au/
The theme for Queensland Mental Health Week 2024 is “Connect for mental health”, emphasising the proactive measures we can adopt to nurture and support positive mental health and wellbeing for ourselves and our communities. Queensland Mental Health Week provides an opportunity for all Queenslanders to consider and connect with the people and communities that they rely on to help them be mentally healthy, through a range of events and activities.
Connect for mental health focuses on four areas:
- Connect with self: Take care of yourself, do something you enjoy, make healthy choices, and seek help when needed.
- Connect with community: Create supportive and inclusive environments, look after one another, and connect with culture. Show kindness and initiate connection with those who are struggling.
- Connect with others: Foster relationships with loved ones, friends, family, and mob. Spend time with others and make meaningful connections.
- Connect with nature: Take a break from technology, spend time outdoors, embrace mindfulness, and take care of the world around you.
E-SAFETY
As we know, the primary role of schools is to educate students, providing them with the opportunity to learn and gain knowledge of subjects studied. However, as educators we also hope for so much more than students just acquiring knowledge. Rather, we hope that students are able to finish school with the necessary skills and confidence to lead a good and fulfilled life. For many students, the journey of schooling can often reflect a roller coaster, where students ride the highs and lows of school life.
There is also no doubt that as digital natives, students are now more connected than ever. In a previous newsletter article, I mentioned the eSafety commissioner website, which has great resources for parents navigating the online world with their children.
What we also know from both social media and online content, is that students consume a range of content on a daily basis. We also know that this content can normalise values and beliefs around how students behave. I recently spoke with Year 7 and 8 students on their assembly about the importance of kindness, and the importance of supporting each other.
The following statement resonates with me in the way that students can support each other.

A great analogy of the power of lifting others up comes from the famous Canadian geese, flying in their distinctive V-shape formation across the sky. While their appearance does serve as another reminder of the change in seasons, an examination of this behaviour can also reveal some useful lessons about leadership and the value of collaboration.
Whilst the Canada geese serve as a leadership lesson, it is also a lesson in how the support of all birds achieves a common goal. When the Canada geese travel in V-formation, the lead bird’s job is not simply to guide the other birds as to which direction to fly. Rather, the lead bird’s primary role is to help reduce air drag so that the flock can fly for greater distances without expending more energy. The same approach applies to the role of leadership, where the function is not to get others to simply do your bidding, but doing whatever is in your abilities to help others succeed in reaching the shared goal.
Words are powerful and can be a force for bad or a force for good. Words can also tear down or build up. The simple use of encouragement can be a powerful tool for all students. Encouragement says “You can do it”, and we see this regularly on the sporting field. When students provide encouragement to others, it gives them confidence and also helps others to believe in themselves.
I would encourage all students to consider how they can build others up and look for opportunities to do so. Building others up, whether it be through kindness or the simple use of encouragement, costs nothing, and takes very little time. Sometimes it is the simplest of things that can have a profound impact upon the life of another person.

E-LEARNING IN 2025
Students currently in Year 2 are being invited to attend an information session being held on Thursday 10th November at 6pm in the Hall, to look at joining the one-to-one laptop e-learning program in Year 3. Expression of interest forms will be handed out at the end of the session for you to complete to secure your spot.

GREAT LUNCH BOX IDEAS
As the warmer weather is approaching fast, we thought it might be a good idea to look at some different ideas that could be included in lunch boxes. It is important to remember to pack a cold freezer block in lunch boxes to keep food items cool and fresh.
CHEESE AND VEGEMITE MINI SAUSAGE ROLLS
Ingredients
2 sheets puff pastry
500 g sausage mince
2 tbs Vegemite
1 cup grated tasty cheese
1 egg
1/4 cup milk
2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
2 shallots, finely slice
1 tbs onion powder
salt and pepper
Method
Gather the ingredients and preheat your oven to 180°C (160°C fan-forced).
In a medium-sized bowl, mix mince, Vegemite, onion powder, shallots, garlic and cheese until combined. Season with salt and pepper and mix again (using your hands in the best way).
Lay out both the sheets of pastry and cut them in half horizontally. Now you should have four. Put a row of the mince mix on each of the four sheets.
Mix the egg with the milk and brush it onto the pastry before rolling it up. Place the roll seam-side down and cut it into mini rolls.
Pop each roll on lightly greased baking paper on an oven tray (still seam-side down) and brush the tops of the rolls with the egg and milk wash before baking them for 30 minutes.

FINDING CALM IN A BUSY DAY – 3G WITH MRS CASTADA
In our busy lives, it’s important to take a moment to be still and calm, especially when we are feeling big emotions like frustration or anger. 3G have brainstormed ways to self-regulate when our lives get hectic. Here are some simple ways to help calm your mind and manage those big feelings:
- Take Five Big Deep Breaths: When you're feeling upset, deep breathing can help you relax and think more clearly.
- Walk Outside: A change of scenery and fresh air can help you feel refreshed.
- Listen to Music: Music can change your mood and help you feel more at ease.
- Do Something Fun: Take a break and enjoy a fun activity you love.
- Picture Your Tasks Getting Done: Visualizing tasks being completed can reduce stress and make you feel more in control.
- Drink Water: Staying hydrated helps your body and mind stay balanced.
- Find a Quiet Place: Sometimes, a little peace and quiet is all you need to feel better.
- Get Some Sleep: Rest is essential for a calm and healthy mind.
- Colour or Draw: Expressing your feelings through art can be soothing.
- Drink Your Favourite Beverage: A warm or refreshing drink can bring comfort.
- Read a Book: Escaping into a good book can help you relax and unwind.
Try a few of these tips when you need to calm down, and see which ones work best for you!
Well done 3G and Mrs Castada for these great suggestions.
CLASS FORMATION FOR 2025 SCHOOL YEAR
Each year at this time, the Deputy Principals start working on setting up classes for the following school year. If you think there is something that the Deputy Principals need to consider in the placement of your child, based solely on their social and emotional needs, you can email the relevant Deputy Principal over the next week.
It is important to note that requests asking for specific teachers will not be accepted and will be deleted.
Any emails received after Friday 18th October will not be considered as the process of forming class will have already commenced by this time.

Year Four and Five

Welcome back to Term 4! It was nice easing back in with a week then a long weekend to help prepare us for the 11 week term. This term brings with it all the end of year activities but also it is a reporting term so lots of assessments happening.
At the end of the day, your child may not answer the question “how was your day?” but it is always important to check inc. Have you tried these questions:
- Did you help anyone today?
- Did you read a book today?
- What was something new you learnt today?
- What was something you found challenging?
- Did you make a mistake today? What did you learn from this mistake?
- What was your favourite thing that happened?
Are you returning in 2025:
Last term communication was sent out to find out if your child is returning to MacGregor in 2025. To ensure we set up classes with accurate numbers, please let the Office know if you are not returning.
Holidays or Departing early:
If you know you are taking leave throughout the term or leaving early, please ensure you have had some communication with your classroom teacher. Assessments are not something we just give to the students and hope they do their best, but instead, clear teaching of the curriculum to ensure they are best equipped to complete the assessments. This may mean, if you are leaving early or taking time during the term that your child misses their assessments for subjects. Students are not marked down for missing assessments, but the relevant data is taken into account and an overall grade from this data only is made.
Year 5 Swimming:
As well as being an important life skill, swimming is part of our Term 4 HPE Curriculum and your child is assessed on this area. Online consent has now closed but there are still students who have not been given consent, meaning from Week 3 they are no longer allowed to swim. Paper copies will come home by Friday for you to complete.
Year 5 Camp:
Payment deadlines have now passed and we still have a significant number of unpaid students. I will be required by Wednesday 16th October to hand in accurate numbers, dietary and medical information. Please ensure you action any payment or completed the dietary and medical information.
Year 4 Lone Pine excursion:
Payment is now able to be made with invoices being sent Friday afternoon. Any parent helpers who can help on the days of their child’s excursion day, please contact your classroom teacher for more information as this makes the day much easier.
Year 4 Pinball Machines:
Students across Year 4 have created Pinball Machines for the Technology task. 4D invited the other classes to come along and test their machines out.

Year Six

A special message from Miss French
Welcome back to Term 4!
For a short but rewarding 7 days, I had the opportunity to step into the role of Acting Deputy Principal for Year 6. It’s been a rewarding experience; a new way to engage with both the students and the wider Macgregor school community. While I miss 6C, I’ve loved staying connected with our amazing Grade 6 students in this new capacity.
Our Grade 6 students have jumped right into an exciting new adventure, diving beyond the real world to explore the fascinating genre of science fiction. They’ve begun delving into their new novel, The Wild Robot, sparking curiosity and sharing their first impressions. We can’t wait to see where their imaginations take them as they continue exploring.
It’s hard to believe, but our Grade 6 students are now entering their final term of primary school! This is a special time as they prepare for the exciting transition to high school. Over the coming weeks, they’ll not only continue their academic journey but also take part in memorable activities and celebrations to mark this important milestone. Let’s make the most of this final chapter together!
Beginner Language Bootcamp Success!
Recently, a group of our Years 6 students participated in the Beginner Language Bootcamp, an exciting online course offered in partnership with the University of Queensland Institute of Modern Languages (Grades 6-12). Over five days, students immersed themselves in learning either Korean or Japanese, dedicating 2.15 hours each day to their language sessions.
This unique experience provided our students with a fantastic introduction to a new language and culture, all from the comfort of home. We are proud of their enthusiasm and commitment throughout the program!

Message from our Guidance Officer

Dear Parents and Carers,
I would like to say a huge thank you for attending today’s Mental Health Awareness Event. It was beautiful to see so many smiling faces and I hope this occasion has encouraged open conversations about mental health and the tools we can utilise to support our physical, emotional and social well-being.
I would also like to say a huge thank you to Hauffs Butchery and Bella Meat Market for generously donating sausages, and to McDonald's for providing delicious hotcakes – Kids (and us adults) loves their food.
During the event, we explored various tools and strategies that can help us all support our mental health. It is so important that we continue these conversations at home, encouraging our children to express their feelings and understand the importance of mental well-being. Creating an open dialogue about emotions and mental health can guide our children to seek help and know which tools to reach for
Please find below some images capturing our lovely community during this special event.
