From the Principal

Dear Parents & Caregivers,
It's difficult to believe that we have already come to the end of Week 4 and the middle of the term is fast approaching. It’s great to report that our new preppies and new students in other grades have settled in well and are wearing the MacGregor Tartan with pride! This week it was also a joy to officiate at the 2025 School Leader’s Badge Ceremony – we are really looking forward to working closely with this year’s school leaders who are already making us so proud.
Queensland Association of State Schools Principals (QASSP) Role 2025/6
At the end of 2024 I had the privilege of being elected to the QASSP Board. Membership of this board affords me a unique opportunity to gain insight into Government Education Policy which in turn informs my work as Principal of MacGregor State School. My tenure as a board member is for two-years and is a voluntary unpaid role. Some of you may remember Mr Pat Murphy who was acting Principal at MacGregor some time ago. Pat is currently the President of QASSP.
What is QASSP?
- A member led professional association dedicated to improving educational outcomes for state school students in Queensland.
- Our members serve in 932 locations, from remote islands in the Torres Strait and one-teacher schools in the rural west to our state's regional centres and largest urban state colleges.
- Our work impacts 345,000 primary school students, their families and communities.
- The Board is frequently invited to provide advice to Senior Public Servants and Members of Government on Education policy at Local, State and Federal Level.
At our first board meeting last week I had the further honour of being elected Secretary of the Board and member of the board executive. Members of the Board Executive are frequently required to represent the organisation at local, State, Federal and even international forums. As a member of this organisation for 18+ years, my active participation in this organisation has enriched all of the schools of which I have been principal and directly benefited the leaders and communities of those schools.

School Review Greenbank State School
I have been invited to be a part of the school review team at Greenbank State School in Week 6 from Tuesday 4th – Thursday 6th March. Gary Davey will be officer-in-charge during my absence. Regularly participating in school reviews is an important aspect of my professional development as a senior experienced principal and I try to do three or four reviews per calendar year.
Yours in Equity & Excellence,
Mr. Lee Gerchow
Principal
Facilities update
All of our older classroom blocks were painted over the holidays and it is great to see our school looking fresh and bright in line with the pride our community feel in MacGregor SS. The large fig tree has been removed along with a number of other ‘weed’ trees which were causing damage. We are awaiting our facilities business partners advice about rectifying the damaged plumbing around the hall before determining what landscaping will replace the fig tree.
We also understand there is some concern over the loss of shaded areas around the junior adventure playground due to the removal of problem trees. The school is seeking quotes for shaded covers and walkways in this area however this will take some time. Sunscreen is available at the office for students to access when required.

Thank you P&C!
1. Oval is looking fantastic now that all the maintenance was carried out over the holidays. The unsafe goal posts have also been removed. – Many thanks to the P&C for 2024 donations to make this possible.
2. The new water coolers have been installed! – Also partially funded by P&C donations in 2024

3. A major upgrade of the outdoor learning space between E Block and Admin will be carried out in the Easter holidays. The 3 shade sails will be replaced/installed. The 3 semi circles will be Astro turfed on the ground and repainted. The overgrown garden which blocks the drainage will be removed and replaced with buffalo grass creating an attractive ‘green’ space. Thank you to the P& C for their contribution to this project at our meeting this week - $35 000 donation from the P&C this term will partially fund this project.

Prep to Year Two

Welcome to Week 4!
Congratulations to all learners in Prep and Year 1 sector on settling in so beautifully and engaging in learning.

Congratulations to all the boys and girls who received the awards at the assembly. We are very proud of you!

Children in Prep E and Prep F (with Mrs Wiggins, Mrs Skipage, Mrs Cameron and Mrs Wong) put together a wonderful display of their learning in the Tuckshop area. Please take the time to check it out and share the joy of learning with the children.

We have noticed an increased number of children playing on the play equipment before and after school. Please help us keep all children safe by actively supervising your own children and staying off the playgrounds during these times.
To ensure the safety and security of all students and staff, we kindly request that parents and visitors refrain from lingering on the school grounds once the learning day has commenced. Once the bell rings and the school day begins, we kindly ask that you say your goodbyes and make your way off the school premises.
We understand that it can be tempting to stay and watch your child settle into their daily routine or to have a chat with other parents, but it is crucial that we maintain a secure environment during school hours. By limiting access to the school grounds, we can better monitor who enters and exits the premises, ensuring the safety of everyone inside.
If you need to visit the school during the day, we kindly ask that you report to the main office and sign in. Please ensure the school gates remain shut during school hours.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Junior Adventure Playground – Sun Safety Reminder
Currently the nature play playground is not shaded due to tree removal.
The school is currently obtaining quotes to reinstate the walkway from the covered courts to the hall. Once the walkway has been constructed the school will look at a practical shade solution for the nature play playground. In the meantime we take this opportunity to remind parents of the schools’ sun safe policy and strategies, in particular the following:-
- The school supplies SPF 30 or higher broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen for student use.
- Parents/carers are encouraged to apply sunscreen to their child/children before school.
- Parents/carers can provide sunscreen for their child if they don’t wish their child to use the school’s sunscreen.

Year 2 Excursion – Toohey Forest Environmental Education Centre
Parent and carers, we are now seeking your consent and payment for your child to attend the Year 2 Toohey Forest Environmental Education Centre Excursion being held in Week 6.
All details can be found via your QParents App. This will be an opportunity for students to connect to their science learning with a fun, interactive and engaging day out. This excursion is scheduled for Week 6 from Tuesday 4th March.
The class days for the excursion are as follows:
- 2A + 2B Tuesday – 4th March
- 2C + 2D Wednesday – 5th March
- 2G + 2H Thursday – 6th March
- 2E + 2F Friday – 7th March

STOP – WAIT – LISTEN – REPEAT – GO: Switched on to learning in Year 2!
For our Year 2 students, it is SO important for them to start the year knowing what is expected of them as learners. Did you know that we need to support our students in developing learning behaviours in the same way we teach academic skills? (Jocelyn Seamer).
Our Year 2 classes are using visuals to help them with their learning routines and they have been super quick at picking up these very simple but important instructions. Well done Year 2!
STOP – WAIT – LISTEN – REPEAT – GO: Switched on to learning in Year 2!

From little things big things grow!
Science in Year 2 involves exploring familiar living things. We understand that living things are present in our environment and that living things change as they grow and develop. We had great fun working in groups and making posters matching babies with adults in the animal world. We also planted some bean seeds in a bag so we can watch them grow all term! Thank you to 2C for sharing your fantastic learning!

The Art of Learning in Art….
Year 2 students are currently exploring the wonderful world of art through explicit instruction with our very talented art teachers, Mrs Benjamin and Mrs Meinicke. Learning in art includes identifying which materials you will use, what techniques you will use and deciding upon the art elements you use to create your masterpiece. And of course, the ability to describe the mood of your artwork is just as important. This week we are sharing some of MacGregor State School’s up and coming artists for your enjoyment!

Keeping our kids safe online
Parents, we encourage you to visit the e-Safety Commissioner’s website as often as possible to access dedicated, age-appropriate and up-to-date information on keeping our kids safe on-line. With specific information to support parents in a wide range of languages, we fully endorse this resource for all of our families.

PROFESSIONAL LEARNING
Last week we welcomed Dr Tim Kitchen into our school. Dr Kitchen is the Senior Education Consultant for ADOBE and he spent the day working with the students in Years 5 and 6. Using ADOBE software, the students were introduced to the world of web design, animation and voice recording using AI Technology.
It has been great seeing the students engage in this software and use it in the classroom.
The sessions with the students were followed up with a workshop held after school that over 58 staff from our school attended. This is an amazing commitment and shows the passion and dedication our staff have to enhance their own professional learning.

NAPLAN PRACTICE TESTS
Year 5: Tuesday 25th February
Year 3: Thursday 27th February
This will give our teachers and students a chance to run through examples of the areas of the tests and the types of questions that will be asked. This is not a long test, but will allow the students to practise using the laptops and understanding how the tools work to answer questions. Teachers may choose to do further testing but you can also view and practise at home by accessing the following link:

Year 5: https://pages.assessform.edu.au/pages/year-5-demos
ASPIRE LEADERSHIP PROGRAM
This week on assembly we joined in the celebrations for the Lunar New Year. The teachers from our languages department worked with some of the students to deliver performances on the Middle Years assembly.
Congratulations to the teachers and the students for their amazing performances.
We wish all members of our community a happy and safe lunar new year.

TEACHING AND LEARNING
The students in 3C have received their laptops!! The students have been busy working with Miss French learning how to be responsible laptop learners and some of the key functions when using a laptop.

3H have been working across a variety of areas in the first few weeks to get to know each other, recognise special events and some Speaking and listening in readiness for our English task.

4B combined the first few weeks of setting classrooms expectations with their HASS units and compiles a list of rights and rules.

Year 6 students are in full swing with their learning this year. 6C students and their teacher Ms Wall have been busy challenging their thinking about in all learning areas. Coming up with creative ways to solve problems.

CLASSROOM MUSIC
Beautiful music was being played in both of our main classroom music rooms today. Year 6 have been busy learning a piece to play on the xylophones and ventured into a range of spaces to practice. The music filtered through the outdoor spaces and drew quite an audience from members of our community as they walked past the school.

SECOND STEP – SOCIAL EMOTIONAL PROGRAM
Over weeks 3 and 4, students from Year 3-6 have been working through their next topic in our Second Steps program. Each topic begins with a 20min focus lesson unpacking what to expect, followed up by short 5-10min activities working through the content involved.
Year 3: Using Self Talk
Year 4 and 5: Listening with attention
Year 6: Empathy
HEALTHY EATING
Having a healthy lunch each day helps the students by giving them energy to help with their learning. Most students eat a majority of their food at first break and we are asking them to keep one smaller item for second break.
We are also encouraging them to try packing a lunch that can be rubbish free. This helps minimise rubbish around our school and also helps with the impact we may have on the environment

UNIFORM EXPECTATIONS
Students at our school wear their uniform with pride and this is frequently recognised by members of our community.
Each Monday ALL students should wear their formal uniform to school. This uniform can also be worn on other days throughout the week.
The sport uniform can be worn Tuesday to Friday.
Our uniform shop is open every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8am.
It is also essential that the students have a hat to wear at school each day. They are required to wear this at morning tea and lunch time and also during PE activities.
Hats should be clearly named with your child’s first name and class, so if they are misplaced, they can be returned promptly.
If you have any second-hand uniforms that you no longer require, we would be happy to have these in the office as spares. Uniforms need to be freshly laundered and in relatively good condition. They will be kept in the office and used as back up should a student have an accident whilst at school.

Global Engagement Program
The Global Engagement Team have a new online program and are currently taking applications that will be held from the 7 to 11 April 2025 – Beginner Language Experience. This program will provide Queensland state school students in Years 4–6 with an exciting opportunity to learn a new language (either Japanese or Spanish) from the comfort of their own home. Through interactive lessons and hands-on activities, students will develop their language skills while broadening their cultural understanding and developing their global competence. Applications for Beginner Language Experience are now open and are set to close on Friday, 14 March 2025 at 5:00pm.
In addition to the above, we will be hosting an online information session (MS Teams link here) on Monday 3 March from 4:30pm for the Beginner Language Experience program if you/your school community would like to join.
BOOK CLUB VOLUNTEERS WANTED
Interested in making a difference at Macgregor State School? Not sure if you have the time? Want to contribute in the times that suit you?
A Book Club Organiser plays an important role in our school and has some simple roles to fill:
- handing out catalogues (up to eight Issues per year) by placing in teacher pigeon holes
- returning the orders to Scholastic
- distributing the ordered books to classrooms — the task is that easy!
Running Book Club enables our school to earn Scholastic Rewards, which can be used to purchase additional learning and literacy resources for the library. You would also be helping provide children and families with access to age-appropriate and affordable books all year round. We have a big school so we are looking for a team of volunteers. Come along to the library on Wednesday 5th March at 2pm and find out more. Email Vonessa_shackles@scholastic.com.au by Monday 3rd March, I’d love to know you are coming.
PHONES AND SMART WATCHES
We are seeing an increase in the number of students bringing phones and wearing smart watched to school.
It is a legislated non-negotiable requirement, that wearable devices (‘Smart Watches’) must be disabled during school hours and must not be used to make or receive calls, texts, take photographs or make recordings.
Mobile phones should be handed in at the office before school.
Parents will be contacted if incidents contravening this policy occur.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK
Cheese and Ham Scrolls
Ingredients
- 2 sheet puff pastry (defrosted)
- 1 egg (lightly beaten)
- 2 cup Bega Country Light 50% Less Fat* Grated Cheese
- 100 g ham (deli) (coarsely chopped)
Method
- Preheat the oven to 200°C and line two large baking trays with baking paper.
- Lay a sheet of thawed pastry onto a surface or chopping board. With help from the kids, brush a small amount of beaten egg over the pastry. Evenly sprinkle half the Bega Country Light Cheese and half the ham over the pastry, leaving 1cm of clear pastry on one edge.
- From the opposite edge, tightly roll the pastry like a jam roll, pressing the clean edge onto the pastry to seal. Cut the roll into 2 cm thick slices and place on the trays, cut-face up.
- Repeat with the remaining pastry, cheese and ham.
- Brush the tops lightly with the remaining egg, then transfer the trays into the oven to bake for 15-20 minutes or until the pastry turns golden.
- Serve warm or at room temperature for a delicious treat

QPARENTS APP
QParents is a great App that all parents can download to assist in a range of services whilst your child is at our school.
The main purpose of using QParents is to grant permission for your child to participate in excursions, activities, camps and extracurricular events.
If you choose not to register for QParents, you will need to complete a hard copy of the form at the school office each time a permission where it is required for your child/ren.
QParents is a user-friendly portal accessible via app or web browser, providing parents with secure online access to information about their child's state schooling.
QParents allows you to access and manage information online about your child including:
- online permission forms
- report cards
- attendance records and absences
- invoices with online payments.
The benefits of using QParents include
- access anytime, anywhere via a smart phone, tablet or computer
- access to the latest information in one central place
- improved administration efficiencies with fewer individual emails, central secure record of parent responses and more effective communication
- elimination of issues with junk email and spam for excursions and invoices.
How do I register for QParents?
Parents who are yet to register will receive an invitation code via email.
This code is needed to create a QParents account.
If your child has already attended another state school and you have an existing QParents account, you will not need to register again.
Your child's details will move across in QParents to MacGregor SS once they have commenced at the school.
When creating an account, you will be asked to verify your identity by giving the document numbers of your government issued identity documents.
If you do not wish to do this, you may instead do a low doc application online, and bring your documents to the school office to be sighted.
Once your QParents account is completed and approved by the school, you can add individual students using their Student Identification number.
Please contact the school office on 3323 4333 if you experience any issues during the registration process

General Update
Arriving at school
Students should arrive no earlier than 8.30am.
All students who arrive before 8.30am should go to the Harmony Place.
Classrooms open at 8.45am and children need to be in their rooms by 9.00am
Anyone arriving after this time will need to report to Student Services to get a late slip. Arriving on time allows your child to set themselves up for success for the day ahead.

Home time pick up
School finishes at 3pm each day.
All students should be collected as soon as possible after this time.
Our administration office closes at 3.30pm each day. Playgrounds should not be used after school, even when being supervised by parents, as this encourages other children to play.

H.O.D. Update

H.O.D. Curriculum

H.O.D. ICT

H.O.D. Pedagogy
Who am I?
I am: Natarsha (Tarsh) van den Boogaard
I began: as a fulltime primary teacher in 1992. I have been a classroom teacher, curriculum coordinator, and instructional coach from Prep/Kindergarten – Year 6 in State, faith-based, independent, and international school systems, including Canberra (my home town), London, Edinburgh, Den Hague and Eindhoven in The Netherlands, and in Brisbane.
Apart from my Primary Teaching Degree, my expertise includes: A Master Degree in International Education (School Leadership) (2018-2020); A Bachelor Degree in International Studies (2008-2011); and an Honours Degree in Social and Human Development (2012).
My role at MSS: In 2023-2024, I was “Instructional Coach of Pedagogy”. I am currently the “Head of Department – Pedagogy”.
What I continue to be excited about: partnering with teachers, listening to, and learning from them. Working authentically with teachers to support and develop their pedagogical practices using effective research-based pedagogies.
What I know: the importance of creating positive connections and relational trust. To be passionate about the work we do. As teachers and leaders, we can support and empower every student to be a confident, kind, and globally-minded individual who is a responsive and engaged thinker and learner.
What have I learnt: the importance of having an authentic growth mindset. I have learnt that it takes courage to teach. Teaching is a challenging, exciting, agile, and collaborative learning opportunity to engage every child to know what it means to be a lifelong learner.
What I aspire: to do and be better! To listen to, collaborate with, and learn from the teachers and students, school leaders, parent and broader community.
You can find me: navan2@eq.edu.au, in classrooms working with teachers and students, or in the ‘Learning and Teaching Hub’.

QLD Department of Education, 2022
What does ‘Empowering learning through pedagogy’ mean?
The way teachers engage and empower learners has a significant impact on student achievement. According to Hattie, quality teaching is one of the strongest influences on student learning. It is ‘what teachers know, do, and care about which is very powerful in this learning equation’ (Hattie 2003, p. 2).
What does this mean in my role as ‘Head of Department- Pedagogy’ (HOD-P)?
Pedagogy refers to HOW the curriculum is taught. In my role as HOD-P and together with MSS’s leadership team, I encourage the use of research-based teaching practices across Years Prep-6 classrooms so to ensure that every student is engaged, challenged and learning successfully. This includes providing regular and consistent opportunities to partner with teachers. To model, co-teach, and develop effective teaching practices with teachers - including explicit instruction - so to maximise student empowerment.
Did you know that the classroom learning walls and environment are thought of as the ‘third teacher’?
Throughout last year, all teachers at MSS participated in professional learning workshops to develop their understanding for why it matters that we make our students thinking and learning visible in the classroom. The third teacher is where co-constructed work exemplars, effective learning tools and scaffolds, and guides are provided for students to refer to; that students understand what they need to know and do to be successful.
Where to next…
We will continue to highlight the importance of professional learning and how it can be used as a lever to deliver effective pedagogical practices. I look forward to working alongside the HOD- Curriculum and the Executive Leadership Team as we focus on having a whole-school approach to the implementation of effective pedagogies to teach reading.
Message from our Guidance Officer

Supporting Your Child Through Morning Goodbyes
Mornings can be tough when your child struggles with separation. Whether they feel anxious, clingy, or teary at drop-off, it’s hard to watch them struggle—and even harder to leave when they’re upset.
With the right strategies, we can help children feel more secure and confident in their morning routine. I’ll walk you through practical steps to make drop-offs smoother, from creating predictable routines to using goodbye rituals that offer comfort and reassurance.
1.Go Through the Morning Routine
Clearly outline what will happen from the moment they wake up until they leave the house.
- Can they watch TV, play games, or draw before getting ready?
- When will breakfast happen?
- What time do they need to get dressed?
Providing structure makes the morning feel predictable and less daunting. Anxious feelings thrive in uncertainty. The more predictable the morning feels, the less space there is for worry to creep in.
2.Morning Checklist
This is a game-changer for anxious children—a simple, step-by-step guide from waking up to leaving the house.
- Co-create the checklist
Involve them in making the checklist. Let them have a say in the order of activities to give them a sense of control. - Picture chart for younger children
For younger children, use pictures to visually represent the steps: brushing teeth, getting dressed, packing their bag, etc. This reduces overwhelm by creating clarity.
3.Go Through What Drop-Off Will Look Like
For anxious children, visualising the drop-off process in advance can make all the difference.
Be specific about the plan
- Will you drop your older child at high school first?
- Will a younger sibling need to be dropped off at childcare?
- Will you walk your child to their classroom or stop at the gate?
- Will they meet a friend or walk in alone?
- Goodbye Ritual
Where will the goodbye happen?
- In the car? At the gate? Outside the classroom?
What will the goodbye look like?
- A hug, kiss, or cuddle? A fun handshake?
- Bag on the rack, grab the water bottle, cuddle, and then off to the teacher?
When your child is upset… validate their feelings, follow the plan, say goodbye. Your calmness reassures your child that they are safe. Keep the goodbye short and sweet.
5.Example Scripts
"When we get to the classroom, we will kiss, cuddle, and say goodbye. Then you will join your class, and I will go to work. You may cry, and that’s okay! It’s hard to say goodbye… I trust that you are safe. [Mum/Dad/etc.] will come back. I will still say goodbye, leave, and you will join your classroom teacher."
"I know it’s hard to say goodbye. I’m going to give you a big hug and leave now. I love you so much, and I’ll see you after school. Remember, you’ll start your morning drawing with [teacher/assistant’s name]."

P&C News
As we reflect on 2024, we want to extend a massive thank you to all our incredible volunteers, parents, teachers, students, P&C employees, and community members for your unwavering support of the P&C. Through your hard work, dedication, and enthusiasm, our fundraising and business ventures saw us be able to support our school and donate over $175,000 in 2024!
These funds have already made a significant impact across a variety of initiatives, supporting vital school projects, resources, and student programs. Your involvement is what makes this possible, and we couldn’t be more grateful.
For more details on how these funds were allocated, please refer to the infographic below. We also encourage you to check out our calendar of events for the upcoming semester—there are plenty of exciting opportunities to get involved including a disco on Friday 28th March!
The success of these events—and our continued ability to support facilities and resources—relies heavily on the involvement of parents. Whether it’s an hour here or there helping out in the uniform shop or the tuckshop, coming along to a P&C meeting, or assisting with food stalls or logistics for a fundraising event, your contribution can make a huge difference.
If everyone pitches in just a little, the collective impact can be tremendous. And remember, it all contributes to enriching your child’s experience at MacGregor. Please consider signing up and lending a hand. Not only is it a great way to meet fellow families, but it also provides you with the opportunity to learn more about your child’s school environment and be an active part of the positive changes you want to see.
Together, let’s make 2025 the best year yet at MacGregor! Thank you again for your continuous support!
