MacGregor State School Newsletter 2025 - Edition 6
From the Principal

World’s Greatest Shave
My wife and I will be travelling to Egypt and South Africa later this term and before I go I will need a haircut, and this time I’m going to make it count! Currently donations sit at $1834 with a target of $3500 which I’m hoping to exceed.
EVER WONDERED WHAT I WOULD LOOK LIKE WITHOUT HAIR? WELL HERE IS YOUR CHANCE TO FIND OUT!
Help me take a stand against blood cancer. If we raise enough money, on the 13th June I will be shaving my hair off in front of the whole school.
Right now, over 150,000 Australians are facing the devastating impact of blood cancer, and 17 lose their life every single day.
That’s why I will be taking on the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave. By donating to my page, you’ll help me raise funds and awareness for blood cancer, and fuel life-changing research projects and support services for patients and their families.
Any amount – big or small – will make a real, tangible difference.

Prep to Year Two

This week, Mr Gerchow, Ms Bailey and I had the privilege of attending the School Leadership Conference organised by the Queensland Association of State School Principals (QASSP). Focussed around the thought-provoking theme ‘Do You See What I See?’, the event offered a unique opportunity to reimagine our practices, challenge conventional thinking, and delve into innovative approaches to education and support. The conference not only inspired me but also provoked deep reflection on inclusive education and dynamic, forward-thinking school leadership.

Thank you to Prep A and Prep B for putting together a wonderful display of their learning in the Tuckshop area. Please take the time to stop by to celebrate their work.

Congratulations to all the learners who received awards at the assembly this week. We are very proud of you! Thank you to Mrs Wiggins for conducting the assembly in my absence.

Outdoor Classroom Day is a global movement to inspire and celebrate outdoor play and learning, both at home and at school. On the 8th of May, all the learners had an opportunity to participate in learning outdoors.

Mother’s Day Pamper Parlour in Prep
Thank you to the Prep Team for organising a wonderful and memorable afternoon for Mums and special people in the lives of our learners. It was lovely to see so many parents attend the event, enjoying the massage, yoga and their nails and hair done. We have a few make-up artists in making who delivered an exceptional service to their Mums.

Our school will celebrate Under 8's Day on Thursday, 22 May between 9-11am. This event is for children from Prep to Year 2. Students can wear a free dress and families are welcome to join us for this event.

Year Two Deputy Principal

Getting Ready to Celebrate Under 8’s at MacGregor State School
The early years are such an important part of social development, learning and growing. With little minds absorbing and connecting to their school routines, learning, friendship groups and positive relationships with their teachers, it is no wonder that school is such an integral and important part of brain and physical development for each and every child.
The annual focus on Under 8’s Day invites us to celebrate the wide opened minds of our younger learners through unstructured play, discovery and agency. We look forward to sharing this lovely experience at MacGregor State School with our parents on Thursday 22nd May from 9am.

Looking for Donations!
We have an exciting activity for Under 8’s Day but we need your help!
Have you got any sheets (flat sheets) that you no longer use? We are accepting donations of flat bed sheets that must be clean and free from holes and, any colour!
Please deliver to the office to the attention of Ms Bailey.

Outdoor Learning Day – Push + Pull Year 2 Science
Last week some classes acknowledged Outdoor Learning Day at MacGregor State School by creatively linking learning area concepts to the outdoors! 2C enjoyed experimenting with different ways to learning about force….I wonder if you can guess what they are doing?

Term 2 Religious Instruction
Religious Instruction is now underway for Years 1, 2 and 3 (Christianity) and Years 1 to Year 5 for Hindu.
What if I want to add my child or remove my child from Religious Instruction?
If parents wish add their child to a Religious Instruction session, they are required to do so in writing as this is considered an amendment to the enrolment form. Once we receive your written communication, we are required to update your child’s enrolment form to reflect the correct information. To ensure staff and students are aware of any changes, please allow us one week to update rolls.
For any adjustments or changes to Religious Instruction, please email: office@macgregorss.eq.edu.au
Is Religious Instruction free?
Parents will be invoiced to cover the cost of a learning booklet that will be used during the Religious Instruction lesson for Christianity. There are no other costs.
If my child is not attending Religious Instruction, what do they do?
As all lessons are held in classrooms, we create a timetable for class teachers that reflect Religious Instruction classes and non-Religious Instruction classes. Children not attending Religious Instruction will be guided by the class teacher that is supervising them. No new learning content is to be introduced during this time.

It has come to our attention a large number of students are bringing items to school and selling or trading them. Selling items or trading is not permitted on our school site and should not happen even with full parent knowledge and understanding. Students who are found to be continuing with selling or trading will have consequences for their actions.
Outdoor Learning Day in 3CD!
Students in 3CD took their maths learning outside this week with a fun and active game of Partition/Addition Tag! Wearing coloured vests with number values, students raced to form target numbers using partitioning and addition strategies. It was fantastic to see the creative thinking, teamwork, and problem-solving in action, all while having a blast outdoors!

Outdoor Learning Day in 4A & 4B
This term Year 4 are learning about Forces in Science. Today two of the classes went to the playground to explore all the forces involved with the equipment. The students had fun working together, sharing ideas and discussing and drawing the forces. We all enjoyed the great weather and the opportunity to do some outdoor learning.

Outdoor Learning Day in 5A & 5B
Students from 5A and 5B ventured outside to tackle new tasks and challenges during outdoor learning day. It was great to see the students out engaged in learning activities in a new way.

Australian Maths Trust
First run in 1978, the Australian Mathematics Competition is Australia’s longest running, largest and most well-known maths competition for school students. The AMC contains unique problems designed each year by leading educators and academics to challenge and extend your child’s problem-solving skills.
Students from Years 3 to 6 wishing to participate will sit a paper-based test between Tuesday 5th and Thursday 7th August at school. This test is not available to other year levels. Testing sessions will be held before school on these days, with students needing to be at school by 7.45am. We will do our best to try not to clash with before school performing arts rehearsals.
Cost for each student is $9.00.
Consent Management requests have been sent out to all families in Years 3 to 6.

Let’s Chat Program
We value parents and caregivers as the primary educators in this area. Equally it’s important to prioritise children having access to important age-appropriate information about their bodies. For that reason, the Australian Curriculum has integrated important sexuality and relationships information into the Health and Physical Education learning space. We strive to provide children with a toolkit that fosters safety, self-respect and empowerment in managing their bodies and interactions with others.
We emphasise the importance of collaboration between parents, educators and children to:
- Bust myths and build body literacy particularly around puberty changes.
- Equip children with tools to understand consent and their body’s unique signals, emotions and needs.
- Empower them to set boundaries, respect others and seek support from trusted adults.

Recipe of the Week
CHEESEBURGER PASTRY PUFFS
Ingredients
- 1 tbs olive oil
- 1/2 white onion, finely chopped
- 500g beef mince
- 2 tbs mayonnaise
- 2 tbs tomato sauce
- 1 tbs dijon mustard
- 1 1/2 cups grated tasty cheese
- 8 sheets frozen puff pastry, partially thawed
- 1 egg, lightly beaten
- 1/4 cup sesame seeds
Burger sauce for dipping (optional)
- 1/2 cup whole-egg mayonnaise
- 1/3 cup tomato sauce
- 1 tbsp dijon mustard
Method
1 Heat oil in a frypan over medium heat. Add onions and mince, and cook, breaking up the mince with a wooden spoon, for 5 minutes until browned and cooked through. Stir in mayonnaise, tomato sauce and mustard. Simmer for a further 3 minutes or until liquid has almost evaporated. Season and stir through 1/2 cup of the grated cheese. Transfer to a bowl and refrigerate until cool.
2 Preheat oven to 200C/180C fan-forced. Line 2 large baking trays with baking paper.
3 Working with one sheet of pastry at a time, score lines to create 9 equal squares. Spoon a scant tablespoon of cooled mince into each square and top with a little grated cheese. Carefully place a second sheet of pastry on top and press to seal the edges and borders around each mound of mince. Use a 7cm round fluted cutter to cut parcels, and transfer to prepared trays. Repeat with remaining pastry and filling to make remaining parcels.
4 Brush tops of parcels with egg and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Bake for 20 minutes until golden and puffed.
5 To make dipping sauce, mix all the ingredients in a small bowl or serving dish. Season. Serve parcels with dipping sauce.

National Walking to School Day – Friday 16th May
This morning Mrs Arthur, Mrs Reid, Mrs Moreton, Mr Grady, Mrs V, Mr Sukkar, Mrs Denny and Mrs Keating met an eager bunch of MacGregor students at the D.M Henderson Park to walk back to school. We safely crossed the road at the pedestrian crossing and then followed the concrete path up the footpath on Carnaby Street and through the back gate next to Moshc. When we arrived at school, all students received a walking to school tattoo they can proudly put on over the weekend.

CYBERSAFETY
Our School is committed to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all children and young people in its community. We recognise the importance of teaching children to develop Cybersafe practices at a young age. As such, we recommend that parents too familiarise themselves with practices that are safe, secure and conducive to a safe online environment. This will ensure that education of cybersafe practices is consistent between school and home life; which is essential for consolidation of understanding and skills.
CYBERSAFETY PROJECT
Digital Discipline: Five Ways to Foster Healthy Tech Habits in Kids
In this digital age, the virtual landscape is as much a part of our children’s environment as the physical one. Just as we teach our kids to navigate the complexities of the real world, it is crucial we guide them in developing healthy digital habits. This guidance will help them harness the positive aspects of technology while safeguarding their mental and emotional wellbeing.
Tip 1: Set a Tech-Free Zone
One of the most effective strategies to foster healthy tech habits in our children is to establish tech-free zones and times. For example, make the dinner table a phone-free area to encourage conversation and connection. Also, ensure bedrooms are screen-free at least an hour before bedtime to promote better sleep. This not only helps in reducing screen time but also in reinforcing the value of personal interaction and the importance of rest. Tech-free zones also support cyber safety and help protect children against online abuse – reducing or eliminating spaces where children may interact online without a trusted adult nearby.
Tip 2: Be a Digital Role Model
Children imitate what they see. If they constantly observe their parents glued to screens, they are likely to emulate that behaviour. Make a conscious effort to put away your devices during family time, and engage in offline activities together. By showing them the joy of reading a book, taking a nature walk, or playing a board game, you reinforce the idea that life beyond screens is rich and fulfilling.
Tip 3: Engage in Digital Education
Use technology as a tool for education and creativity. Encourage your children to use their screen time to learn something new, like a language or a musical instrument, or to create something, such as digital art or coding projects. This will not only make their screen time more productive but also teach them to view digital devices as tools for personal growth rather than only for entertainment.
Tip 4: Cultivate Self-Regulation
Empower your children to build self-regulation skills in their digital engagement. Discuss with them the importance of self-awareness regarding their screen time and its impact on their mood and behaviour. Together, create a ‘Digital Use Agreement‘ that includes time limits, types of permissible content, and self-monitoring strategies. Encourage them to take breaks when they feel overwhelmed or after a set time. When they adhere to these guidelines, praise their discipline. Over time, they’ll learn to manage their digital consumption independently, making responsible choices that align with their wellbeing.
Tip 5: Promote Unplugged Time
Encourage your family to embrace ‘unplugged time‘, where everyone disconnects from their devices to engage with the world and each other. Whether it’s a designated evening each week or certain hours during the day, this practice helps children appreciate activities beyond the digital realm. You can fill this time with group activities like puzzles, outdoor adventures, or quiet reading sessions. This commitment to regular tech breaks will teach children the importance of balance and the joy of life’s non-digital pleasures.
A great place to start is Global Day of Unplugging. Join in as families across the world unplug from technology for up to 24 hours and take the opportunity to reconnect with the offline world instead. Feeling inspired to unplug to reconnect? You can find out more or sign up to participate below.

Inclusion Team Update

What happens when stress becomes too much for a child.
Heightened anxiety can be most evident when stress builds-up to the point of emotional outbursts or escalating behaviour (i.e. little things leading to BIG reactions) – when anxiety is heightened, a student’s brain and body are more likely to go into ‘survival mode’, leading to flight/ fight/ fright reactions like running out of class, hiding under their desk, yelling/ swearing, hitting/ kicking, throwing resources/ pushing furniture, or freezing/ withdrawing, etc.

What is happening on the inside?
The cerebrum is the thinking and reasoning area of our brain.
The limbic system is the emotion and reaction centre of our brain. When a student is in ‘survival mode’ their limbic system is in ‘over drive’; at this time it is difficult to engage their thinking or reasoning.
The brainstem controls our body rhythms (such as breathing) and the cerebellum refines our movement patterns. Together, they exert a regulating influence over our nervous system, meaning they help ‘settle down’ the stress reactions in our brain and body.
For cognitive strategies to be effective, students may first need help to calm and focus. Movement activities and breathing exercises can be especially effective calming strategies, as tapping into our movement patterns and body rhythms can help regulate our responses, relieve stress and reduce anxiety.
Students’ resilience for daily stressors, and their ability to regulate their responses, may fluctuate throughout the school day or week. Picture a staircase - imagine the lower steps represent feeling relaxed, middle steps represent feeling calm or focused, and upper steps represent feeling anxious or overwhelmed. It is normal for all students (and teachers) to ‘walk up and down’ the steps throughout the day. Sometimes things happen that ‘bump us up’ a step, such as a distracting or startling noise, a peer misunderstanding or conflict, a difficult or confusing task. When enough of these stressors occur throughout the day or week, students can ‘get stuck’ on the upper steps, where it doesn’t take much to ‘bump them up’ to overload!

The good news is, however, that just as stressors can ‘bump us up’ the steps, there are plenty of things we can do to help ourselves and our students move down the steps when we need to. Tune in next week for strategies to assist with managing stress in children.

Next Week is National Volunteers Week!
Next week, we’re celebrating National Volunteers Week, and we’ll be shining a spotlight on the amazing people who help make our school community so special. Each day on our MacGregor State School P&C Facebook page, we’ll be profiling one of our incredible volunteers — sharing a bit about why they volunteer, what they enjoy most, and the impact they’ve made.
We encourage everyone to log on each day to see who’s being featured and take a moment to reflect on whether volunteering might be something you’d like to get involved in too.
There are so many different ways to help — whether it’s behind the scenes with planning, cooking and selling food, helping out at events, or even just setting up and packing down — every bit of support counts. No matter your strengths, there’s a place for you, and we promise, you’ll probably enjoy it more than you expect!
Please consider chatting to one of the friendly faces you see featured or reach out to us via email at secretary@msspc.org.au to find out how you can get involved.
To all our volunteers — big and small contributions alike — we appreciate you not just this week, but every week. MacGregor is a better place because of you!

Celebrating Our New P&C Life Members!
At our recent AGM, we were proud to award Life Membership to three outstanding volunteers who have each made a lasting impact on our MacGregor State School community through their years of dedicated service to the MacGregor P&C.
Cailie Yu
A heartfelt thank you to Cailie for her tireless volunteering at P&C events over the years. She has been a key coordinator of many of our Chinese food stalls, generously sharing her time, energy, and amazing cooking skills—especially her famous fried chicken, a favourite among students, staff, and families!
Amanda Tan
Amanda has given many years of dedicated service, coordinating our Mother’s and Father’s Day stalls, volunteering weekly in the uniform shop, leading the Book Club, and supporting countless P&C events. Her commitment and can-do attitude have been invaluable to our school.

Her warmth and consistent support have made a lasting impression.
Congratulations and thank you to Cailie, Amanda, and Yeni. Your contributions have enriched our school community and helped strengthen the spirit of MacGregor. The Queensland Trampoline Championships is a premier event showcasing the incredible talent and dedication of trampoline gymnasts from across the state. this competition brings together athletes competing at national and international levels.

Raamaanuja enthusiastically participated in Queensland State Championships 2025 organised by World Cube Association (WCA) at Brisbane State High school in Brisbane. This championship was simultaneously held at many other places in Queensland too. This was his first time attending such a competition. He was eager and excited. Hundreds of people from young kids to adults participated and it was a festive atmosphere. More details on the championship here:
https://www.worldcubeassociation.org/competitions/QLDStateChampionship2025.
Raamanuja participated in 3 categories: 3x3, 3x3 single handed and 2x2. For every competition, he had to do 5 solves, and the best and the worst solve (in terms of duration) were deleted, and the average from the rest of solves was computed to get a score for each individual. Raamaanuja was able to solve 3x3 in 1 minute average, 2x2 in 20 seconds, 3x3 single handed in 1 minute 47 seconds.
He was busy throughout the competition, participating in the competition, judging others, and as a volunteer / helper. He met his favourite Rubik's cube Youtuber with a channel Tingman (photo attached), and another Youtuber from TNL cubing. He also met Charlie, who is a world record holder for 3x3 blindfolded. Charlie flew from the United States to here, only to participate in this championship. This championship witnessed a new world record in the class of 72 year old for the puzzles: 3x3, skewb and pyramix.
